Description: This talk will provide an overview of thyroid care and what an RD should know, in practice, to better help patients with thyroid conditions. You will be able to better recognize the subtle and overt symptoms of thyroid conditions and will be more equipped to answer patient questions or suggest options for their care based on your assessment. We’ll discuss evidence-based medical and dietary recommendations for working with patients with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer. You will learn an overview of thyroid function, medications, and labs for optimizing the medical side of treatment.  Common dietary myths and misconceptions will be highlighted, as well as strategies for weight management and associated comorbidities RDs often work with.  Learn nuances for helping complicated patients with thyroid disease followed by an opportunity for Q&A.

Speaker: Nicole Anziani, MS, RD, CDN, CDCES is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, specializing in the management of thyroid conditions.  As a thyroid cancer survivor, Anziani’s passion and mission is to make nutrition care information for thyroid conditions easily accessible to practitioners and patients; to that end, she creates free thyroid content as @thyroidnutritionist on Instagram.  She is the author of The Health Professional’s Guide to Nutrition Management of Thyroid Disease; the first peer-reviewed, American Thyroid Association physician-reviewed, and evidence-based practice guidebook to instruct dietitians and allied healthcare professionals on MNT for thyroid disease, published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2020. The book is available from eatrightSTORE.org, Amazon.com, and from various CPE providers. She is currently writing the CPE exam for Wolf Rinke’s test associated with the book as well, which should be available in the coming months, and is a founding member of the Board of the American College of Thyroidology.

Objectives:

1.     The talk will provide an overview of the thyroid and its relation to commonly seen conditions.

2.      Will help attendees understand labs related to thyroid function and how to interpret them within the scope of dietetics practice.

3.     Will help review available medications for the treatment of hypo- and hyperthyroidism.

4.      Will review food and nutrition recommendations (and myths) for hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer.

5.      Will describe the signs, symptoms, and comorbidities that RD must be aware of.

6.      Strategies for working with challenging cases.
