Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects at least 25% of adults in the United States and could soon be the major cause of cirrhosis and liver failure.
Dr LeWine will review the lifestyle interventions including dietary changes and weight management as the best way to stop this epidemic, given the limited pharmacologic therapies currently available.
Objectives:
1. Overview of fatty liver disease and its close association with obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease
2. Screening and diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
3. How lifestyle changes greatly improve prognosis, with a major focus on diet
Howard LeWine, MD is Chief Medical Editor at Harvard Health Publishing, a division of Harvard Medical School. Dr. LeWine is an Internal Medicine physician, who practiced primary care for more than 20 years.
He is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and continues to teach and supervise medical students and residents who rotate on a special medical unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
