About the Speaker: Fatemeh Giahi is a registered dietitian nutritionist with a PhD in nutrition from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her dissertation was on the topic of rural to urban migration on the nutritional status of a peri-urban population in Iran. Her international nutrition research interests had been on hunger and malnutrition in developing nations and the effect of migration on health. Prior to her nutrition counseling career, she has taught basic nutrition, biology, international nutrition, migration and health and biostatistics courses at Hampshire College, Simmons College and Greenfield Community College since 2003. She is now providing medical nutrition therapy at her private practice, Valley Nutrition Counseling in Hadley since 2011 and additionally at Atkinson Family Practice since 2017. She has completed a certificate of training in adult weight management in 2009 and childhood and adolescent weight management in 2010 form Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Giahi’s main interests are weight management, Eating disorder, prediabetes and Gastrointestinal nutrition. In addition to motivational interviewing, Dr Giahi teaches mindful eating strategies to most of her clients struggling with weight loss. Mindful eating has helped many of her clients who are emotional eaters, disordered eaters or reluctant dieters.



Program Objectives: After attending this session, participants will be able to: Define mindfulness, mindful eating and mindful eater Learn the concept of the client-centered non-diet counseling model (CNCM) Review studies on mindful eating as a successful strategy to improve nutrition Practice mindful eating techniques and strategies that helps clients or patients succeed portion control and make healthier choices *2 RD CEU’s for attending*
