Cannabis: what every RD should know

Speaker: Janice Newell Bissex, MS, RDN, FAND is a Holistic Cannabis Practitioner, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and cookbook author. Janice now advises clients on access, proper cannabinoid ratios, dosing, best consumption methods, and cooking with cannabis at Jannabis Wellness. As Program Director of Cannabinoid Medical Sciences and professor of cannabis therapy at John Patrick University School of Integrative & Functional Medicine. Janice’s goal is to educate health professionals on the therapeutic benefits of cannabinoid therapy. She is a 2015 recipient of the Media Excellence Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and past President of the Massachusetts Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Description: Patients are using and asking about cannabis and CBD products with greater frequency, especially as these substances have been legalized by an increasing number of states. This webinar will provide a historical perspective on cannabis use, an overview of the endocannabinoid system, and a review of research on the potential medical benefits of cannabis and CBD. Practice guidelines on the use of cannabis for a variety of conditions, administration methods, dosing, potential drug interactions, and legal issues will be discussed. .



Learning Objectives 1. Identify the major compounds in cannabis and hemp plants and explain how they may promote healing and relief 2. Discuss the components of the endocannabinoid system and its role in homeostasis and how an imbalance may negatively impact health 3. Discuss the different methods of cannabis or CBD administration, including why some methods might work better for individual clients than others, factoring in potential drug interactions and medical conditions
