American Dietetic Association's Medicare Nutrition Therapy page

The ADA COI is available to ADA members who desire to learn more about coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and exchange best practices to help advance coverage of nutrition services with health plans, employers and third party payers. To join, go to http://eatright.communityzero.com/reimbursement.

Medicare

MNT is covered for Medicare patients who have a diagnosis of renal failure (pre-dialysis) and diabetes. ADA is working to enact legislation that would broaden the scope of coverage. To obtain reimbursement for services, a dietitian must obtain a national provider identifier number.

National Provider Identifier

NPI was mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information, and is required for all providers.  It may take 10 days to receive your NPI number.
