Third MSDA Member Meeting(March 2, 2010)

Please join us March 2nd, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, for our third meeting of the year, where we will have networking with members and an exciting talk from speakers Julie Thayer and Lauren Oliver on the RD's role in sustainable food systems.

The Case for Local: Why Dietitians Should Care About Where Food Comes From

The current industrial food system is an incredible departure from how food was grown, processed, and distributed for thousands of years. In its short history it has been implicated in widespread nutritional, socioeconomic, and environmental consequences from nutrition-related chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes to nationwide outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. These concerns, along with a heightened awareness that local food has positive impacts on community economic development and the environment, have led to a movement toward more sustainable food systems. There are numerous examples of successful efforts on both local and national levels to improve access to fresh, local foods. Dietitians can and should be key advocates of healthful, nourishing food in public health policy, in the institutions where they work, and in their practices with individual clients.
