Providing CPEs for RDs

If you are a Program Provider seeking CPE approval, you no longer need to have pre-approval for CPEs with the Professional Development Portfolio process. The only time you need to seek prior approval is when you are doing a self-study.

As of June 1, 2005, all RDs and DTRs recertify under the professional Development Portfolio recertification process. Therefore, you no longer need to have (CDR) sign-in sheets/rosters present at your event as Program Providers no longer need to report CPE hours to CDR, since all RDs and DTRs now track their own CPE activities on a Step 4 Learning Activity Log.

However, you may wish to maintain attendance records for the participants and for your own records. Please provide RDs and DTRs with supportive documentation, such as a certificate of completion or detailed timing/outline agenda. Click here for a sample certificate of completion. Suggested verbiage to be included on program materials for CDR approved activities includes, but is not limited to, "Dietians can earn up to ______ CPEUs according to their individual portfolio plans."

In addition, under CDR's Professional Portfolio Development recertification system, RDs and DTRs must choose a learning code (LNC) for each activity that best meets their individual goals. RDs and DTRs are now responsible for choosing this code based on program content. As a program provider, you may wish to list a suggested learning need code or codes associated with your program, however, this is not mandatory. A "Learning Need Code (LNC) Quick Reference Guide" and additional information can be found on www.cdrnet.org.
